With the end of active coal mining in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Ruhr region faces the challenge of coping with the possible effects of post-mining. For example, the planned rise in mine water could lead to ground movements such as uplift and thus to changes to the surface. Comprehensive geospatial monitoring is necessary to minimize the impact of this uplift on public and private infrastructure. Integrated measurement methods make it possible to detect changes to the surface at an early stage and to prevent or reduce consequential damage by taking timely action.<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It is crucial to continually adapt the possibilities for evaluation and monitoring to technological progress. The experts at the Research Center of Post-Mining are therefore investigating the use of innovative technologies, analysis processes, and monitoring methods, e.g., radar satellite remote sensing (Sentinel-1) and ground sensors. The findings will result in a long-term feasibility study, known as a \u201cProof of concept. Detecting ground movement.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project was carried out from 2020 to 2022. The Research Center of Post-Mining works closely with DMT GmbH & Co.KG<\/strong><\/a> as well as with the Ruhr area cities of Dortmund, Essen, Bochum, M\u00fclheim, and Duisburg.<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
