The aim is to reduce methane emissions in the energy sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Methane is a greenhouse gas and, after carbon dioxide, is considered the second-largest contributor to climate change. It is responsible for around 30% of global temperature increase. The new regulation establishes binding targets for reducing methane emissions. Among the measures is the requirement for operators to regularly report on methane emissions from their sources. Companies in the oil, gas, and coal sectors are required to compile an inventory of closed, inactive, sealed, and abandoned facilities, monitor their emissions, and prepare a plan to reduce emissions as quickly as possible. Stricter obligations for the detection and repair of methane leaks also apply. In addition, more stringent requirements for imported oil, gas, and coal will come into force from 2027 onwards.<\/p>\n<p>The FZN specializes in revealing hidden underground processes by evaluating and merging different geodata. Whether public data, remote sensing methods or on-site analyses - the FZN can support the measurement and monitoring of methane emissions with technical expertise and advanced technology.<\/p>\n<p>This includes tasks in four different areas:<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"toggles\" data-style=\"minimal\"><div class=\"toggle extra-color-1\" data-inner-wrap=\"true\"><h3><a href=\"#\"><i class=\"icon-plus-sign\"><\/i>Methane emissions at boreholes<\/a><\/h3><div><div class=\"inner-toggle-wrap\"><div class=\"divider-wrap\" data-alignment=\"default\"><div style=\"margin-top: 12.5px;
