REMINDNET

European knowledge management for dealing with the consequences of mining

The FZN is a member of the Europe-wide network REMINDNET (Recovery of Mining District Network), which brings together more than 130 scientists and engineers from 60 organizations in 37 countries.

The network promotes the exchange of knowledge and develops a joint research agenda for addressing the legacy of raw material extraction. The primary focus is on minimizing the risks to people and the environment posed by the legacy of mining.

In particular, improperly closed or abandoned mines represent a difficult legacy for governments, communities and mining companies. Specialized knowledge and methods are required to successfully close and rehabilitate former mines. Working together, the network aims to close the knowledge gap on the sustainable management of contaminated sites.

REMINDNET is made up of natural-, geo- and social scientists, engineers, humanities scholars and economists from universities, colleges and research institutions as well as experts from public authorities, companies and NGOs.

The EU funding agency COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), which supports research and innovation networks, is funding the network until 2027.
