European Coal in Transition: A series of high-level events to spread knowledge from recent and ongoing RFCS projects, encourage new players to join the RFCS community, and foster policy dialogue (HIGH-LEVEL)

Support for initiatives within the framework of high-level events that accelerate the implementation of innovative results from RFCS projects and expand the RFCS research community through cross-border and cross-sector collaborations.

The selected projects will be closely linked to the RFCS’s research priorities and will reflect the EU’s policy priorities. Overall, the HIGH-LEVEL project aims to support the coal industry and the RFCS research community during a period of transition. The first event will be hosted by the FZN in Bochum on September 29–30, 2026, in cooperation with the “Coal Regions in Transition Initiative (CRiT)” and under the patronage of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Project objectives

  • Organizing high-profile events in various EU countries, each with a clear and specific thematic focus aligned with the project's objectives.
  • Compilation and documentation of the outcomes of each high-level event, including policy guidelines on particularly effective research and development activities that could be funded under the RFCS during the next EU budget period through 2034.
  • To engage in a structured dialogue with stakeholders at each event, involving representatives from business, academia, EU institutions, politics, and regional authorities.
  • Support for initiatives within the framework of high-level events that accelerate the implementation of innovative results from RFCS projects and expand the RFCS research community through cross-border and cross-sector collaborations.
