Project

Extension of the monitoring of the Paasbach water tunnel

© THGA / Volker Wiciok

The Georg Agricola University of Applied Sciences (THGA) and the City of Hattingen are continuing their research cooperation on the Paasbach water tunnel. The focus of the new project phase is the development of a novel BIM-compliant 3D model of the underground structure – an innovative approach that combines state-of-the-art digital planning methods with classical geotechnical and mining-related investigation.

Based on an existing 3D survey of the water tunnel, an approximate three-dimensional model is to be developed that meets the requirements of Building Information Modeling (BIM). For the first time, a georeferenced structural engineering description of the building will also be prepared, and its results will be integrated directly into the digital model. Both partners (Research Center of Post-Mining & City of Hattingen) aim to jointly publish the results in a scientific publication at the conclusion of the project.

Structural engineering investigation underground

Within the framework of the cooperation, THGA is responsible for the conceptual implementation of non-destructive investigations in the water tunnel. These include, among other things, the development of a segmented visual inspection description, measurements of the reinforcement using impact and magnetic methods, and the extraction of core samples at selected locations. These structural parameters form a central data basis for the intended 3D model. All tunnel inspections are carried out on the basis of a specially developed safety concept.

Historical research and municipal geodata

The City of Hattingen contributes extensive expertise to the cooperation: historical research provides the historical contextualization of the structure. In addition, the city provides municipal geodata and coordinates access to the tunnel, among other things through the Hattingen Fire Department.
