Part 1: Sampling and on-site investigation
In collaboration with Prof. Dr. Christian Melchers and Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Westermann from the FZN, a new practical guide to mine water was published in spring 2024. It was developed in the mine water working group of the hydrogeology section of the DGGV (German Geological Society - Geological Association). The guideline deals with the sampling and on-site investigation of mine water.
Review
Dr. Bastian Reker, Research Center of Post-Mining
The first part of the practical guide to mine water addresses a knowledge gap in hydrogeological practice. The first German-language guide for the professional sampling of water affected by mining operations covers everything from the preparation of field work (including obtaining permits, tips for the required material) to the most important sampling procedures. The key on-site parameters are also described in a transparent manner. Internationally renowned experts in post-mining and hydro(geo)chemistry provide valuable practical tips from decades of professional experience. They show how typical errors in sampling and sample preparation can be avoided and how pitfalls in the handling and interpretation of measurement results can be avoided. Valuable tips on documenting the obtained data and subsequent analysis in the laboratory round off the guide.
The publication represents an important and indispensable contribution to ensuring that mine water samples can be taken in a standardized and systematic manner in order to ensure the comparability of analysis results. A second part on the systematic evaluation and correct assessment of the analysis data will complete the practical guide to mine water in the near future.
