Hernan Flores joined the ranks of mine water experts who gathered in Morgantown, West Virginia for the West Virginia Mine Drainage Task Force Symposium & 15th IMWA – International Mine Water Association Congress from April 21-26. At the international conference, Flores presented how monitoring the tailings ponds in the former Ibbenbüren coalfield can contribute to a sustainable reuse of resources. He was awarded one of two IMWA Awards for the best student presentation. The prize is endowed with 500 euros.

“I am thrilled to receive the award,” the research engineer commented. “Most importantly, however, I am delighted to be able to make a contribution to the mine water community. It is very important to be able to precisely characterize post-mining sites. With our approach, we not only aim to monitor the environment, but also to explore the potential for the secondary economic use of mining waste facilities through innovative sensor technology.”
Flores was also elected as a member of the IMWA Executive Council. From 2024 to 2027, he will help foster international cooperation in the field of sustainable mine water management and strengthen the IMWA's global presence. His particular aim is to establish networks for young scientists through the Early Career Division. He will advocate for policies that prioritize responsible mining and environmental stewardship to pave the way for a greener future for the mining industry.
