The Research Center for Post-Mining (FZN) is taking a significant step forward in its role as a leading institution for research and innovation in the field of reactivation and transition.
Starting in 2025, the FZN will launch a new series of conferences, organized in cooperation with the G20 Global Land Initiative | UNCCD, that will focus on land restoration, sustainable transformation, and the economic development of post-mining regions.
The first event for this series will be the international symposium "Land of Opportunities," which will take place from September 15–17, 2025, at the UNESCO World Heritage site Zeche Zollverein in Essen .The symposium offers a unique opportunity for scientists, policymakers, industry professionals, and NGOs to exchange the latest scientific findings, innovative technologies, and practical approaches in land restoration and the transformation of mining regions.
Opportunities for Sustainable Transformation
The international symposium aims to intensify the scientific dialogue on the sustainable use of postmining areas and develop new forward-thinking solutions.
This will be supported by interdisciplinary discussions, practical workshops, and exciting excursions in the Ruhr Region.
Scientists from the fields of environmental sciences, geology, resource management, ecological restoration, and economic transformation are invited to present their latest research, engage in discussions with other experts, and explore new opportunities for collaboration.
The Symposium – A Unique Networking Opportunity
In addition to keynote presentations by international experts and the opportunity to participate in workshops, the symposium will also offer a range of networking opportunities where researchers can connect with policymakers, industry representatives, and NGOs. Participants will gain insights into the industrial history of the Ruhr region and learn why it now serves as a model for sustainable transformation. Lern morge about the Ruhr region HERE!.
