From Germany’s Ruhr Region to the Italian Alps: the COST-REMINDNET project is gaining momentum

Following the successful launch of the first Training School at the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola under the direction of Dr.-Ing. Tansel Dogan, the second event in Turin has also concluded with great success. While the event in Bochum focused on remediation technologies and the use of drones, the second Training School at Politecnico di Torino shifted the emphasis to the complex world of global legislation and mining/post-mining management. Meanwhile, another Training School followed almost seamlessly in May in Bodrum, Turkey.

In a series of interactive and thought-provoking workshops, REMINDNET participants engaged in in-depth discussions, exchanged knowledge and perspectives, and explored the complexities, challenges, and opportunities of post-mining management. Each individual session contributed to a deeper understanding of the importance of sustainable and responsible approaches in this field. Once again, the REMINDNET Training School in Turin demonstrated how valuable collaboration, knowledge exchange, and hands-on learning are in shaping a more sustainable future. Thematically diverse presentations also highlighted how different post-mining conditions are across Europe – and, consequently, how varied the measures and tools must be to achieve the best possible post-mining management while taking ecological, social, and economic objectives into account. Both Hernan Flores and Dr.-Ing. Tansel Dogan, who attended the network meeting together, said they were impressed by the diversity of the Training School in the Italian region of Piedmont.

The highlights in Turin:

  • Global insights: The sessions provided deeper insight into how different countries – from Canada to Estonia – are dealing with mine closures.
  • Hands-on skills: The program moved from theory to practice – with technical training in QGIS and Google Earth Engine.
  • Underground: One special highlight was the field trips, including visits to the Traversella Mine and the Bossea Caves.

A week of intensive learning and networking in northern Italy, combined with a diverse, international, and forward-looking exchange of ideas, gave the REMINDNET mining and post-mining network another significant boost, according to FZN researcher Dr.-Ing. Tansel Dogan. The gathering, titled “Legislation and management aspects of post-mining activities,” proved to be a valuable continuation of the initiative.

This year’s Training School was therefore able to build effectively on the ambitious ideas developed during the kickoff event in Germany This kickoff event, organized by Dr.-Ing. Tansel Dogan, was held at THGA from June 24–28, 2025. Turin also highlighted the value of the preceding event, the REMINDNET Training School 2025 in Bochum, where participants from Turkey, the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, North Macedonia, the UK, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco, Serbia, Bulgaria, France, Estonia, and Germany worked closely together.

International REMINDNET network gathers again in Bodrum

The series will continue almost seamlessly with the Training School in Turkey. From May 4 to 8, 2026, this meeting will place special emphasis on socioeconomic aspects and financing methods related to post-mining activities.

Topics presented and discussed there include, among others:

  • Sustainable Tailings Management in a Socio-Economic and Environmental Context
  • The Geopolitics of Post-Mining Landscapes: Legacy Scars or Strategic Reserves?
  • Introduction to Casestudy: Forecasting Restauration Costs in Mining Using the Example of Data from the Canadian province of Quebec
  • Social Dimensions of Transition in Polish Mining Regions - Challenges, Impacts and Selected Lessons
  • Legislative Implications
  • Short and long-term managements of the post-mining risks, from mining compagnies to local mining authorities
  • From Mine Legacy to Regional Value Creation: Financing, Business Models and Just Transition Pathways for Post-Mining Districts
